One-fourth of Czechs believe in God

Almost one-fourth of Czechs believe in God, and one-tenth pray and go to church regularly, according to a poll conducted by the Centre of Analysis and Empirical Research (SANEP) in October. The poll, published by CTK, was in connection with the Pope’s recent visit to the Czech Republic.

Prague full of non-believers

The poll shows that 24 percent of Czech are believers. The highest share of believers is among those aged over 58 and people living in Moravia. The lowest share of believers is in the capital of Prague and in Central Bohemia.

According to the latest census in 2001, 2.7 million people professed to follow the Catholic Church in the ten-million Czech Republic.

Only 10 percent of the polled say they go to church and pray regularly, while 28 percent go to church from time to time and 20 percent pray sometimes.

What about church restitution?

Only 17 percent of the polled agree with the restitution of the church property that was confiscated under the communist regime. Apparently not all believers support the restitution. A total of 68 percent are against the church restitution and 15 percent are undecided.

The poll was conducted on 16,890 respondents aged 18-68 on October 1-3.
