STATEMENT BY PROINSIAS DE ROSSA MEP
Labour MEP for Dublin
Thursday, 19th February 2009
Dublin Labour MEP Proinsias De Rossa speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels today has described President Klaus’ comments to EP as a ‘bizarre fantasy’. What is obvious to most members of the European parliament is that he does not support even the existing treaties, which are the founding documents of the European Union. The treaties commit the European Union to the social solidarity, and economic and political union. The Czech Parliament which elected him (he was not elected by popular vote), and the Czech people will decide for themselves whether he represents their views.
“It is simply bizarre that President Klaus has come here today and called for further deregulation of the markets and blames ‘government interference’ with the market as the cause of the economic problems we now face. Not even the neo-conservatives in the USA are prepared to make this fantasy argument. He makes this case at the very time when the irresponsible de-regulation of the banking and financial sector over the last 30 years is the direct cause of the loss of millions of jobs, the homes, pensions and savings of working people, while the high rolling gamblers in the banking sector are being bailed out with taxpayers money.
“I defend without reservation President Klaus’s right to make his case before the parliament. Indeed he may well have done us all a service by revealing how slight the Eurosceptics grasp is on political and economic reality.”
